During 1980 IBP, Inc. (formerly Iowa Beef Packers, Inc.), attracted by southwest Kansas feedlots, opened the world's largest packing plant in Holcomb, 10 miles from Garden City. In 1983 Val-Agri (now Monfort) modernized its Garden City plant. By 1990, these two plants were employing approximately 4000 workers. .
